It's no surprise that flowers make people happy! Humans have been infatuated with flowers for centuries - we paint, draw, sculpt, and write about them. From fashion to function, flowers are a part of most of our world. Why do these inflorescences make such an impact on us? What is it about flowers that makes us smile?
#1 Flowers Connect Us Back to Nature
People are spending more time inside than ever before. The World Health Organization has found that North Americans are spending 90% of their time indoors! Japanese medical doctor, Qing Li discovered that spending time in nature reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and anger. This same study also found that close contact with nature strengthens the immune system, improves cardiovascular health, increases metabolism, and boosts overall well being. We don't even have to be exercising - the simple act of being present with Nature is enough! Fresh flowers in your home or workspace can assist in providing this much-needed connection.
#2 Flowers Improve Creativity and Innovation
If you've ever found yourself at a creative roadblock, you know how much that mental fatigue piles up! Researchers at Texas A&M University discovered that workplaces with plants and flowers had greater levels of problem solving and creativity compared to workplaces with abstract sculptures or workplaces devoid of embellishments.
#3 Flowers Help Us Heal
We often send flowers to loved ones who are recovering from surgery or an illness while they are in hospital, but did you know that those flowers can actually speed up the healing process? Researchers Seong-Hyun Park and Richard H. Mattson discovered that having fresh flowers in a patient's room improves overall healing time, lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety and pain, and boosts feelings of positivity. They even suggest that flowers and plants can be used in conjunction with Western medicine to reduce patient stays and alleviate an over-burdened medical system.
#4 Flowers Boost Our Mood & Memory
We live in a fast paced world these days, and with so much on the go, it's more important than ever to take the time to stop and smell the flowers! A study published by Rutgers found that 100% of people receiving fresh flowers produced a Duchenne, or a true smile! In the same study, participants were asked to remember certain information and those who had fresh flowers in their space were better able to recall the information.
What does all of this mean? It means that sending fresh flowers to a loved one or having fresh flowers in your home or workspace will improve your quality of life. For as little as a coffee a day, you could have a fresh bouquet of flowers in your home that will last all week!
