The rubra starts life with shades of green, yellow, and red which all deepen as the plant matures and enters its bloom cycle. Over time the ionantha rubra will create "pups" and will eventually form a clump.
Related to bromeliads, air plants are epiphytes, growing along the branches of trees. They do not have a true root system and instead collect their water and nutrients from their rosette-like leaves.
Air plants prefer bright light and can be watered by soaking in a bowl of room temperature water once a week for about 30 minutes to one hour. They should be allowed to drain upside down before being returned to their upright place.
